In the article “Kellyanne Conway slams feminism as ‘anti-male’ and ‘pro-abortion”, Nicole Bogart talks about last Thursday's controversy that arose when Kellyanne Conway the White House advisor brought up that she is not a feminist. During the talk at the Conservative Political Action Conference, she talked about how Donald Trump is a “great boss” to women. Kellyanne pointed out early in the interview that she is “neither ‘anti-male’ or ‘pro-abortion’”. After hearing Conway, social media reacted quickly by saying that she doesn't understand the real meaning of feminism. Some commented the definition of feminism and recommended that she better understand it before making accusations about the feminism movement. Conway also went on to criticize the women's march, by assuming that “A lot of women just have a problem with women in power”. Conway has suggested this before, in an interview with the Washington Post she said that the feminist movement has been hijacked by the pro-abortion movement. Conway stated that she considers herself a “post feminist”. She also suggested that the feminist movement tells “young boys to sit down and shut up in the classroom”.
Questions: Do more people need to be educated about the real meaning of feminism and equal rights?
Do you think it's possible that Kellyanne was told to say this or only said it for media attention?
In this article, David Cochrane talks about the legalization of marijuana for the 2018 Canada day. The legislation will be announced during the week of April 10. The federal government will be in charge of making sure the countries supply is safe and secure. Ottawa plans to license producers, but the provinces will decide how much marijuana they sell and distribute. The provincial government will also be able to set a price and a minimum age. Canadians will be allowed to grow their own with a limit of 4 plants per household. Justin Trudeau said it was necessary to "legalize, regulate, and restrict access to marijuana" in order to keep drugs "out of the hands of children and the profits out of the hands of criminals". He also stated that "Until we have a framework to control and regulate marijuana, the currents laws apply". Many people think the reason Trudeau had so many youth voters and won the election was because of his idea to legalize marijuana, some think that it is now "an example of a broken Liberal promise".
Questions: Should marijuana be legalized? If so why?
Should people be allowed to grow their own plants?
What problems could arise if marijuana is legalized?
In the article “Australian video reveals types of call domestic violence counselors get every day”, by Emanuela Campanella, she talks about how a campaign called Full Stop Foundation released a video. The video was about how they took regular people and made them listen to a voice recording about a phone call they received. They were told to stop it when it was too much. The recording is of a women talking about the emotional and financial abuse she goes through from her partner. The recording goes on to talk about the physical and sexually abuse, many of the listeners asked for it to stop there. They released the video “to highlight the less recognized forms of abuse”.
Questions: Is this a good strategy to get these problems more well known? Why?
Are there better ways to “highlight” these problems? What ways?
Violations Through Racism The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, was released in 2008 based upon the novel by John Boyne. In the movie Bruno the main character and his family move from Berlin, Germany to live near a concentration camp where his father is the commandant. Bruno begins to explore the yard and finds a way to the camp, where he meets a boy named Shmuel. Shmuel is a Jewish boy on the concentration camp. Bruno is oblivious to the concept of the camps and the situation that Shmuel is in. Although Shmuel and Bruno are divided by the barbed wire fence they still become good friends. Some of the human rights violated include article 1, 2, 4, 5. Article 1 is violated in the movie because During WW2 all Jewish people were limited from being born free and equal. The jewish people were forced into concentration camp whether they deserved it or not. For instance, Shmuel and his family were put into the camps and had to do whatever they were told. Article 2 was abused in the movie because Jewish people weren't entitled to all the rights and freedoms. There is a lot of distinction for them through racism, religion, status, and by opinion. For example, all the jewish people in the movie were abused and treated differently because of their race and status. Article 4 is that no one should be subjected to slavery or servitude. In the movie the main house that Bruno lived in had a man that was held as a slave. The man's name was Pavel. For example, when Bruno asked the young soldier where he could find a tire to make a tire swing, the soldier screamed across the yard to Pavel and told him to come here. Pavel began to run towards them, the soldier then yelled again to hurry up. Pavel ran as fast as he could, but he was pretty weak and could only go so fast. The soldier then ordered he to get Bruno a tire and put it wherever Bruno wanted. There was no reason for Pavel to be their slave but he was treated that way. Pavel explained to Bruno that he used to be a doctor before he was taken to the camp. Article 5 was abused in the movie because many people that were Jewish were often abused physically, also many were tortured and punished because of their race. For instance, when Shmuel was working in the house the one day, Bruno gave him some food because he was starving. When Shmuel was caught eating he was punished, when Bruno saw him a few days later he had a black eye and his face was bruised. Another example could be when Pavel was working in the main house, he was pouring the wine for a young soldier and spilled. The soldier grabbed him, dragged him to the hall, and beat him. After that we are left unsure about where Pavel went because he isn’t in the rest of the movie. In the movie, the director Mark Herman, did a very good job releasing the tension after major scenes. For instance, when Pavel is yelled at to grabbed the tire for Bruno, the audience gets to experience a high of anger, but after it’s released when Pavel and Bruno begin to talk. The director gets you to feel many emotions through the movie, such as, happiness, joy, anger, fear, love, and even friendship.
